What are Headaches?

It’s generally assumed that headaches originate in the brain. However, the brain has no pain nerves, so it can’t feel pain. Most headaches actually originate in the head, neck, and face and radiate to other parts of your head. Depending on the location, source, and type of headache, you may experience unrelenting, continuous, or occasional throbbing and squeezing sensations. You may experience headaches on one side of your face, in front or on the side of your head, or across the entire skull.

Primary & Secondary Headaches

Primary headaches are those without an underlying cause or condition, such as migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches. These headaches may be triggered by sounds, lights, scents, and other triggers, but they’re not symptomatic of underlying medical conditions. Secondary headaches are symptomatic of underlying medical conditions and diseases like tumors. They are usually accompanied by fever, weakness, and other symptoms and necessitate immediate diagnosis. For more information on treatment options, please contact our headache specialist in Las Vegas for an appointment.

Diagnosing Headaches & Migraines

Your headache and migraine treatment starts with a thorough evaluation. Our healthcare providers carefully evaluate your symptoms, review your medical history, and ask about your family history to determine the type of headaches you suffer from. They also administer advanced diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, to pinpoint the specific type and cause of headaches, following which our migraine specialist in Las Vegas curates an appropriate treatment plan.

The Most Common Primary Headaches

Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache. Tension headaches usually occur because of a severe tightening of the muscles that surround the skull, resulting in a sensation similar to a band being tightened around the head. Tension headaches lead to pain and tension on both sides of the head, face, and sometimes neck. They can also increase your sensitivity to light and sound and make sleeping difficult.

Migraines
Migraines are the second most common type of headache, and it’s estimated that 1 in 4 households in the United States has members with chronic migraine. Migraine headaches cause dull or acute throbbing sensations, and some of the other symptoms include distorted vision, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, speech problems, and irritability. Retinal or ocular migraines can also include auras, i.e., a visual disturbance that leads to light flashes on one or both eyes. Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches appear in specific patterns and last for weeks or months. The headaches may persist for several weeks or months and then recede for several years. Cluster headaches are severe and usually affect one side of the head. Other symptoms of cluster headaches include red eyes, teary eyes, nasal discharge, small pupils, sweating, drooping eyelids, and agitation.
